Dieser Erfolg konnte jedoch nicht verhindern, dass inzwischen die Masse der feindlichen Kampfwagen, begleitet von starken Infanteriekräften, die immer näher heran kam und dass schließlich die Panzer außer Gefecht gesetzt wurden. Leutnant Rehnitz erkannte sofort die Gefahr, die dadurch für die gesamte Abwehrfront des Regiments entstanden war. Rasch entschlossen fasste er die Bedienungen seiner ausgefallenen Geschütze sowie einige in seiner Nähe befindliche Panzergrenadiere Zusammen und trat an ihrer Spitze zum Gegenstoß an. Mit Handgranaten wurden die zahlreichen Feindpanzer und die ihnen folgende Infanterie so wirksam bekämpft, dass schließlich ihr Angriffsschwung gebrochen werden konnte. Obwohl selbst schwer verwundet, gab Leutnant Rehnitz die Führung nicht ab, bis der Gegenstoß vollen Erfolg gebracht hatte und ein weiteres Eindringen der Bolschewisten verhindert war.
